Aspen, Colorado is a small town with a gigantic reputation. It is one of the most popular year-round ski resorts in the United States and is a favorite playground for the rich and famous. At an elevation of 7,908 feet, Aspen is a winter wonderland with spectacular scenery, fine dining, shopping boutiques, and of course, skiing. Although skiing is what Aspen is most known for, there are plenty of other fun activities to partake in. Wintertime activities include downhill and cross-country skiing, sleigh rides, ice-skating, and, in January, the Winterskol Carnival. Winter sports are what Aspen is known for but the town is a popular summer destination also. Prices are significantly lower and the resort is less crowded. Warm-weather activities include biking, hiking, horseback riding, white-water rafting and fishing. Every summer from late June to late August, Aspen is host to the Aspen Music Festival with more than 100 classical music performances. Aspen is a small town that is basically divided into three main sections: Downtown, the West End, and the East End. Snowmass Village is a resort with its own identity but since it is only 10 miles from Aspen they are often closely associated.
Downtown
where the action is. Old renovated Victorian houses and brick buildings house the many ski shops, trendy boutiques, chic restaurants, and pubs that keep the area hopping along the tree-lined streets. Trails on the ski slopes of Aspen Mountain actually end right in town.
East End
The East End is a quiet residential neighborhood that is situated among the trees and is divided by the Roaring Fork River.
Snowmass Village - a world-class resort of its own right with 32 restaurants and bars, 25 retail shops, a golf course, outdoor festivals, and a wide variety of lodging options. Complimentary shuttle buses serve the entire village.
West End
Many of Aspen's hotels, rental condos, and bed and breakfasts are located in the West End. The neighborhood is mainly a quiet residential area.
As the Aspen public schools opened their doors to students this past week, there wasn't much quiet about it: elementary school kids squealed in delight on the playground; middle-schoolers slammed their lockers and roamed the halls in packs; high school students hit the books and the playing fields.
The Colorado Labor Wars raged during 1903 and 1904. Centered in Cripple Creek and Telluride, the union battles stirred passions across the state, especially in Aspen.
Black Crowes are returning to Snowmass on Sept. 5. Photo courtesy Alan Sculley Last summer, the Black Crowes seemed to be in as good a place musically and internally as at any time in the group's 20-year career.
Nothing - not sweaters, not the smell of fireplaces, not pumpkin patches, and not apple picking - says "fall" like the blazing red, glimmering gold, and burnt-orange leaves that cover trees and crunch underfoot during the autumn months.
I was very impressed with the article "Exile on Main Street" . I have stopped twice to offer a ride to Ryan when I have seen him at the ramp to the Interstate.

Colorado has a rich, if eerie, musical tradition. Just ask Joe Walsh, who returns to the "Rocky Mountain Way" this weekend to headline the Jazz Aspen Snowmass festival on Saturday night with his buddy/bandmate Glenn Frey.
The only thing worse than Mondays is the end of the summer season. A Thankfully there is a solution in sight- Labor Day 2010 arrives on the first Monday in September, offering a final chance of summer enjoyment and partying.
